The xylophone is higher in pitch range and has a drier timbre than a concert marimba.
In the past, I taught Zimbabwean marimbas that do not use sharps or flats. This style is fun to play in groups and you may have seen us on the plaza. I no longer teach an after school program but if one is interested, I can arrange to teach your group of 3-4 people for four lessons.
I am happy to announce a new project just waiting for a child who wants to explore sound & become a musician.
Xylophone lessons are taught privately. Students own their instrument for practicing at home and to bring to lessons.
A very good instrument with resonators and paduk keys can be purchased at Guitar Center for $550. The xylophone in the photo is an example.
A younger student could begin on a xylo without resonators found online for $80-$250.
The beauty of African xylophones inspired composer Carl Orff to develop a program of music instruction for children using xylophones, movement and singing as the core curriculum.
In my 30 years as a music teacher in the public school, I found that children love playing mallet instruments more than any other instrument.
I would be happy to talk with you about your child's music education.
I look forward to an opportunity to meet with you at the Studio.
